What’s it about?

The shipping industry is a huge contributor of climate-wrecking emissions. The expansion of the Port of Liverpool in 2016 and its plans for even further growth raise important questions about the sustainable movement of freight. Join us for a Q&A with Bill Esterson MP; Cllr Paulettte Lappin, Cabinet Member for Sefton Council; and CEO of Friends of the Earth, Craig Bennett to explore the potential solutions.

A successful Port of Liverpool is seen as important to the economy of Liverpool City Region and beyond. But the embedded carbon emissions in consumer goods imported via UK ports are often out of sight and out of mind. Air quality in the neighbourhoods surrounding the port is being undermined by emissions from visiting ships while fleets of HGVs on local roads are causing heavy congestion and jeopardising the health and wellbeing of the local community. Is the proposed access road through Rimrose Valley really the answer? Have other options been properly explored? And how do we square all this with the need to rapidly transition to a low carbon, circular economy and local and national commitments to reach net-zero in the face of the climate emergency?

Come and join the discussion!
